Dr. Barbara A. Schwalge's main concentrations are filing and prosecuting applications, preparing arguments for proceedings before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, and drafting patent opinions. Dr. Schwalge has prosecuted patents in the pharmaceutical, plant protection, polymer, catalyst, industrial process, production plant and equipment fields as well as patents for medical devices and designs. She was co-inventor in a number of patents in the fungicidal and herbicidal field (1986-1996) and has broad technical experience in chemistry with an emphasis on organic chemistry.

Dr. Schwalge has been practicing in the intellectual property field since 1988, first as an in-house counsel in the department for Patents, Trademarks, and Licenses (now the Global Intellectual Property Department) of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Germany (1988-1997). She was responsible for drafting, filing, and prosecuting national and international applications related to plant protection, opposition, and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, and was involved in drafting and negotiating licenses.
