December 17, 2009

This morning, Novak Druce + Quigg LLP hosted a segment in their “Oxford Comes to Florida” event series in West Palm Beach. The program featured Dr. Christopher McKenna, Research Director of The Novak Druce Centre for Professional Service Firms at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School and the author of the prizewinning book, The World’s Newest Profession: Management Consulting in the Twentieth Century.

McKenna, Reader in Business History and Strategy at the University of Oxford, discussed a chapter in his forthcoming book, Partners in Crime, on the history of white-collar crime and the changing role of professional firms.

McKenna also described how many of the recent regulatory changes were first proposed in the 1930s when the Great Depression gave a boost to many of the leading professional service firms in America. “Most of the leading accounting, law, and consulting firms,” said Dr. McKenna “achieved last success in the depths of the worst financial crisis in American history.”

Individuals from various fields including the legal, financial, law enforcement professions attended the event.

“Chris McKenna is just the first many eminent scholars to come visit,” said Greg Novak, CEO and Managing Partner of Novak Druce. “We will continue to bring scholars/ academics from the Novak Druce Centre for Professional Service Firms to the Florida community.”

In October 2009, Novak Druce launched The Novak Druce Centre for Professional Service Firms at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School. The Centre explores key challenges confronting the professional services sector, conducts research, and provides training to further the advancement of the management of professional service firms.
